Welcome to Active Kids PE

Active Kids PE is a Physical Education class for children  in English by Taro Itsumi

The same curriculum as the popular physical education class "Active Kids Fit," taught by head coach Taro Itsumi at the Tokyo American Club in Azabu, will be offered in Jiyugaoka.

Greetings and Warm-Up

The lesson begins and ends with greetings such as "kon-ni-chi-wa" and "sa-yo-na-ra."

Through call and response, children will  have the opportunity to think for themselves  and speak in their own words. It leads to improvement of communication skills.

Once everyone is ready to concentrate and listen to the coach, the lesson will start with dynamic exercise (active movement).

Flexibility

Mat exercises and stretches (static movement) are performed as routine work in each lesson, aiming to make the body less susceptible to injury. When there are multiple people, they share a mat in pairs, and foster social skills by discussing their turn and communicating with their partner. Forward and backward rolls   strengthen the semicircular canals, improve balance, and ultimately enable  backflips on the horizontal bar. Depending on your level, you can even try cartwheels!

Ex.1 : Vaulting Box

The vault is an event that gives children a sense of accomplishment. In addition to improving their whole-body explosive power and spatial awareness, the moment they successfully jump, they feel proud of themselves and their self-esteem increases. This successful experience leads them to maintain a positive attitude when taking on other challenges.

Ex.2 : Horizontal Bar

The horizontal bar, which uses the whole body, is expected to improve muscle strength. The backflip may be the first skill in a child's life that gives them a sense of effort and accomplishment. Since they can't do it all at once, start by hanging from it, then play by imitating animals, and finally work on specific skills.

The 4 stages of development in Montessori education

At Active Kids PE, we prioritize developmentally appropriate activities for children over merely completing tasks.

Adults should not rush or get ahead of themselves but rather observe and support activities best suited to each child.

For children aged 0 to 6, we aim to provide multiple opportunities for them to experience the satisfaction and success of "I did it on my own!" We create an environment where children can feel a sense of accomplishment through their own efforts.

For children aged 6 to 12, our goal is to support them in "thinking for themselves" through gymnastics.

Greetings

Compared to my own childhood, I feel that the opportunities and time for children to play outside have significantly decreased.

In this era of rapid digitalization and social media, while global connections and swift information sharing have become possible, the importance of face-to-face communication is also being recognized.

In my class, we focus not only on improving physical abilities but also on the concepts of " Watch, Listen and TRY".

We aim to develop self-expression skills, the ability to build relationships with others, an understanding of responsible freedom, and the ability to think and act independently.

I hope that through this class, you will cherish the "encounters" with friends and coaches.
